Boat Safety question. Flexible hose to metal, I know the metal fitting into the hose has to have the correct barb(?), but does it have to be a swaged ferrule or can the single or double eared clips be used to secure it. I know they aren't keen on jubilee clips.
I need a couple of the flexi hoses replacing.

Outboard motor fuel lines are crimped with the double-eared clips, two pairs of pincers will tighten these nicely, but for inboard engines it always used to be made-up armoured flexi hoses with properly swaged ends and union connectors connected to copper pipework by compression fittings.
Made up armoured flexi won't do it for bss, you need hose marked iso7840, yes it should be swaged/crimped if a pressure hose or permanently filled with fuel. Check the bss guide for definitive specs.
Don't get me started on fuel hoses. I had to replace a perfectly good steel braided hose with a naff bright yellow one, just because it wasn't marked.
I've also had to replace a never used "as new" fire blanket because the label fell off the housing so it did not have the required marking. The blanket itself had the marking but that did not count... Grrr.
I've heard of quite a few folk having to replace fairly new oem fuel hoses to keep bss happy when they were considered perfectly safe for sea use and have never been known to fail. Also modern diesel with the bio-ethanol content is known to degrade iso7840 hoses.....Stupid! That said I still agree the bss is a good thing in general.
