Hi everyone and thanks for letting me join this great site. We have just purchased our first boat this week for a restoration project. we currently have it in dry dock in Garstang on the Lancaster canal what paint do you recommend to paint the boat with ? Many thanks in advance Stuart
We bought the boat not a week ago and have had it taken out of the water and put in dry dock so we can antifoul it and paint it.
Mark come over and say hello, you wont be able to miss the boat, it is called moonraker and it is the tattiest boat on the marina.. for now..lol !!
We found out late last week that the enfield Z drive was knackered and have had Steve from Altham Marine to come and have a look at it and he is going to fit a reconditioned one.
its going to be a labor of love but we have fallen in love with the boat and are determined to bring it back to its best.
The boat has been painted over so many times and has had quite a few knocks so i don't think we can bring it back to the original gelcoat so we are going to paint it, but there are so many different makes of paint from international- hempel-supplyshed etc we don't know which one to choose.
I'd ask around on the marina for someone who knows about paint you don't want to use something that's going to react with the stuff what's all ready on there.there's a guy on the corner of the toilet block painted his not long back looks a decent job can't Rember name of boat there's a sticker in window this is our city have a walk round You'll find it it's right on the corner as you go up hill to the office
I had an ex-hire boat that had been painted umpteen times with heaven knows what and then left on mooring for years.
I got very serious with a mini-grinder and a load of flap discs to cut back flaking paint that in places was 2 or 3 mm thick - terrible mess!
Originally I did the whole boat with Dulux Weathersheild paint including a boot topping as it was cheap and others had said it worked. Indeed it did and was on the hull for years with no problem at all. Topsides it soon got scruffy and I bought some polyurethane 2-pack epoxy paint from Brewers and apart from the stink and the need to do some bits twice because of "Bleed thru" of the old colours it went on over the Dulux very well. It was on the boat a few years until I sold it, complete with the Weathersheild hull!
