Of course do it yourself David, it's only a prop on a drive, it cranks up and you can back onto a bank or pontoon and do it dead easy. Save your money for something serious later. Also - don't buy a new one until you look into the repair costs.

Not a pub crawl Dave Flint (DF) before you suggest it.

Ok so next question

Have any of you guys replaced the console? With the power/speed etc, the whole unit, how easy is that to do? Mines looking a bit shabby in its old age. Guess it's mean new key, and socket too?

Done loads over the years! On a 20 with a 1600 crossflow and an Enfield 130 combo I built a new console, fitted instruments some of which I got from an old Jaguar in a scrapyard, fitted a top mounted control I got second hand and a nice spoked wheel using the existing Teleflex gear.

It's only carpentry and some electrical work after all. Clad in faux leather, with the dash faux leather over 15mm thick foam, pull tight and staple round the back for the dash, fix down with mirror screws or screws and cups or fit countersunk machine screws before you upholster it and hinge the entire console to swing out so every fixing is concealed behind but you can get at the gubbins and wiring behind once you swing it out.

Don't be afraid to get started, the longest journey started with the first step!

Yeah been there, much easier for a single engine than for a twin obviously, just varnished ply can look nice.

I managed to lose about 5" off the length of my helm giving more space in the cockpit but it did make the underside a bit cramped.
