| I think it might be worth having a word with him to see how much he could help.even if it was just to get it running again for you to edit.Just maybe some simple advise. |

If Trevor seems a bit reluctant to accept help from a third party it might be because he has previous experience of it. A while back a chap was going to redo everything, promised him the world and then promptly disappeared... |

Right, Dave, Ian !
Have a peek here. Which hosting package do you think would best suit??
http://www.meccahosting.co.uk/services/web_hosting/
I'm thinking "Value" or "Basic", Present costings are not far off the Basic level so no real financial penalties.
I suspect the email service for normanboats will cease although I don't think anyone but me actually uses an addy now!

I'm still to be convinced by them, bandwidth in visitors rather than GB and storage in web pages/images, the figures don't realy mean anything as both can be any size. If cost is going to be similar why move at all? I thought this was a money saving exercise. When it comes to front page extensions, access and active server pages I know sod all, I've always used linux servers via ftp and sql database for the ouseabout forum and now use a free hosting option for the forum.

Depends on your visitor level I guess. Assuming it's not too hard to switch between the plans I'd be inclined to start on Value and switch up if necessary. The pics allowance is a bit stingy but they can be hosted elsewhere if necessary.
I used to use MS FrontPage, Dave, and I can see why Trevor likes it. It gives you WYSIWYG editing and one click publishing to a compatible server. It's all a bit dated now and long gone from the MS catalogue but it works and it means Trevor will be able to update the site again. That's not bad for someone his age....
Trevor, you should be able to continue to use the normanboats email addy too. Maybe get the site and forum running first then worry about that one.

Mark who I know came to my house and discussed the website he is doing for me. He is recommended from one of my best friends. Not a faceless person at the end of a computer. Who ever revamps the site lets hope its good. Bob |

To clear up one issue, if I stay where we are I cannot edit and publish the site using frontpage. There are things about frontpage generated stuff that will not transfer to other editors and, unless the host supports MS extensions, I can't use frontpage. The problem hasn't changed over the years, there are far too many pages on the site to convert individually to suit another software editor.
I'm a wee bit worse for wear due to drink at the moment so this might not all make sense to others of a more sober nature! |

Keep up the good work! I didn't know the present lot had stopped the FP bit.

You have me thinking about the photo limits Ian. Yes, I could stick all the pictures on something like flickr but then would I not have to edit each and every photo link on every page?? Those limits could be a bit of a problem. The current deal simply allocates web space rather than counting individual files I think.

I'm on the cusp! Painfull....... Have been in almost constant communication with these folk at Mecca. Give them their due, they always respond promptly to my questions. They are pointing me towards their "Value" plan which, despite the advertised limits, they sat they are confident that this will suit the site. I did point out that there were actually more than 9,000 (NINE THOUSAND) individual pages and images and asked if he realised the size. He came back and said he does not think that is a problem. So, is he telling me porkies to get my custom?? I can't see the point in that as I can immediately exit any plan I take up that does not work and we are not talking vast fortunes. Ten squid setup and less than four squid a month thereafter.Even a full year is only forty quid!
Comments and opinions please! |

Will the move lose the forum database from the present server or will the files linger for a while?

I get the impression that they copy the files rather than drag them all away. I know that the only available command is to "import" your site from the host server. But I will ask that question specifically. |
