Following contact from a helpful fella called Terry I have found these folk across the pond!

http://www.meccahosting.co.uk/ggfp/

They appear to suppost all the features I needed when editing and publishing the site using frontpage and seem to suggest that I could continue doing it this way. This would save a huge amount of work and I could simply go back to adding random pages as I did before. That's before you point to the original confused mess Flinty!

I got this response to an enquiry.

Hi Trevor,

Yes, you would be able to edit and publish with FrontPage -- all our hosting plans include FP extensions, and they are installed by default.

As to the Snitz forums, the only information I could find shows that it appears to use ASP, which we do support, but we don't have any customers using it, so I can't guarantee that it would work on our services.

Eric Cole
Mecca Hosting

You will see the only possible problem is the working of the forum. They do say that "ASP" which Snitz uses, is supported but, because no customers have used this before, they can't promise it will work.

I would welcome any thoughts and opinions regarding the likelyhood of success????

The hardest bit is getting the forum database over and working on what would probably be a newer version of the snitz forum, for the ouseabout.co.uk forum I now use prophpbb.com which cost me nowt but I've no idea how to go about getting the snitz database to work with it, you could contact their admin and see if they could help as they were fairly helpful getting my of database converted (although that was already an sql database on a linux server).
I paid a few quid a month for premium membership control till I got it setup right and went back to free membership when I was fairly happy with it, had no spam from them and get no ads from them.
It's just the potential loss of forum data that's the risk, does anyone do hosted snitz forums on the same basis?

Oooh exciting!

There is a decent chance Snitz will work and you may be able to stick with the version you are currently using.

The only way to find out is to jump in and try it. I may be able to help if you need it.

Converting the Snitz database to another forum format is unlikely to work well unless someone has created a specific tool for the job. Just make sure you have a backup of everything before you fiddle...

Am I being a bit too simplistic to read that this company say they can migrate your whole site for you Dave? Have a look at this....

http://www.meccahosting.co.uk/ggfp/

Surely by copying the website from the current host that will include that wierd snitz database file??

I've never used windows servers or asp so no idea on that one.
I've just found 5 bad links in the page you linked to, are you sure about trusting them to host your site if they can't get their own page working?

When you say "bad links", expand a tad! Email me if that suits Dave.

If you go to the page you linked there's 5 links beside the union jack, all 5 go to an "apology page not found" error message, I spotted the reason straight away, they have left the /services/ out of the target path, the rest of the site takes you to the right pages.
Whilst it is an easy mistake to make it is also a very easy mistake to spot and rectify, it wouldn't bother me on a site like this but these are supposed to be the 'experts' in web design and hosting and with database migration you could lose the whole lot in one cockup, most of the site is easily replaceable but the forum isn't as you've found before.
If the forum is to be lost and start again it would be better to change entirely to a free hostable version like the phpbb alternative, better to not lose it in the first place.

Does the admin side of snitz allow you to download a database backup first?

If I remember rightly, isn't there an asp file in amongst the files on the hosting site? You looked at these once upon a time did you not Dave? Or was it Ian?

That was a long time ago Trev, I can't remember what I did yesterday due to too much beer intake over the years....
In the admin side of the phpbb forum under maintenence there is an option to backup the DB either to the server or download in different formats, when I switched ouseabout from my own server to a cheapy hosted setup I had to download the DB as csv/txt and go through the headings and change to the new versions heading names, how you'd do that for snitz on windows server I don't know.
See if you can keep both running alongside for a while in case it goes horribly wrong.

I also can't remember too much about it but I have a file from 2007 that is a .dta file that looks to be in plain text containing all the forum posts from 2003 onwards. I assume that was created by a backup process?

The Snitz website says Snitz can use MS Access, SQL server or MySQL but, of course, that is talking about the latest version of Snitz. Trev, questions:

1. Do any of those options ring any bells?
2. Can you see an ".mdb" file?
3. Do you know which version of Snitz you are running?

I seem to remember an .mdb file on Trev's server.
There was a converted txt file we used to get the old forum files searchable with a perl script through the server I was using at the time, it has since gone awol when I downgraded my server package.

I am having some one local to me to do my websites. I mentioned this website and he said he could do something for you. Do you want me to put him in touch with you

Not at the moment Bob, my aim is to do as much as I can myself. Plus I want the thing easily editable again. The beauty of all that is that it costs no more than the hosting fees.
