For me, this would warrant further investigative prodding:

OK, another 3 hours spent with an engine man.
Tappets checked and all fine, fuel line checked from tank all the way to carb, all fine. Carb re-checked and fine. Fuel pump removed and confirmed all fine. Plugs removed and all fine, although slightly white that would indicate running lean.
Ran the engine at 1/2 throttle and 10 minutes in it cuts out again. Carb was full of fuel. IR Thermometer showed engine at temps ranging from 47-88 degrees. Thermostat checked and fine. All electric connections checked and all good. Compression checked and all good.
We are now thinking it's overheating and causing something to mess up.. likely electrics (as others have mentioned). Next steps are to drop the gearbox and check impella (we do have good flow through tell tale) and water pump. If nothing there, then maybe take head off and check there. Plus check all electrics.
Basically I've reached the point now were I'm thinking of cutting my losses and trading it in for a brand new engine. I spent £1000 on buying the engine, and £300 of mechanic time.. plus loads of other odds and sods. I could easily spend another £300 mechanic time and still not have a working engine with the prospect of paying even more out. |

The only real way to pin down electronic ignition problems other than coil resistances is to borrow CDI/powercoil/pickup from another engine and replace one at a time till it goes away, I had a pickup coil fail on my mariner but that was a full on dead fault with no sparks at all. If the tell tale is piddling freely you don't have an engine overheating problem so your problem won't lye in the lower leg, Deano meant internal electrical overheating, dodgy coils can get hot but it's usually the more expensive and harder to test black box components on outboards that cause problems. If your manual gives resistance ranges for the ignition power coil and ignition pickup coil (the ones in the generator on top of the engine) they are worth checking along with the regular ignition coils, if they seem fine then it's try and borrow a CDI unit.(I am making assumptions your evinrude is very similar to my old mariner here)

I was offered lots of outboard engines yesterday (Boat yard closed). So if you are thinking about buying another let me know I think they will not be expensive. Bob |
