Never saw THAT one coming. The motor well is too small for that type of steering? Doesn't make sense, something doesn't add up.

Can you post pics of the front of the engine in left/centre/right positions?

On my 20 the steering came through the hole you have in your first picture on the port side. It was connected straight to the bracket and that tube wasn't used. Even when I put a new Mariner on it that tube wasn't used.

OK, steering cable is feeding in from Starboard into pivot tube.

1. Engine turned fully to port (e.g Steering wheel fully turned to port (left hand down))

2. Engine central to boar.

3. Engine turned to Starboard (barely moves from central).

It's clearly not going to work and you'll have to revert to the original system with the cable mounted on the transom coming through the well side as before.

What a bummer!

You're telling me!

Sadly when I purchased the cable, I purchased it as kart of a kit, including new help, steering wheel etc. The new helm is larger so I had to cut a bigger hole for its mounting brackets. Trouble is, I can't now go back to the original helm/cable as it won't fit in the new helm hole :(

Going to have to try and snake the new cable (which is longer) to the port side and hope the heavyweight cable is supple enough to be moveable when tilting.

Truth be told, the whole things a bloody nightmare!

Managed to get the old system back in but it won't turn the engine enough to port. I think all these problems stem from the Evinrude mounting bracket. If you look at my earlier photos, it's is well off centre with no apparent way to adjust (it forms part of the leg).

With the old system the outer tube of the cable was in a clamp so you can push the steering to mid position, put engine in ahead position, and loosen the clamp and move the tube so that the clevis yoke lines up.

But I'm guessing that by now you already figured that out!

Im not an out board man but looking at the arm that is coming from the engine. When the engine is in the centre the arm is to one side when it should be in the centre. If it was in the centre you have have some steering both ways.

I'd be tempted to make a cut out in the well opposite to where the cable comes in and glass in a box behind it so you get the steering range you need.
