Okay, looks like a typical caravan fridge (3-way, primarily gas) is out due to safety issues. Anybody got any ideas on what to use for a (very small) fridge? We're not keeping the boat for weekending or short jaunts, but intend to be out on it for anything between 1-4 weeks, and yes, I know there are shops out there, but not necessarily when and where we'd want them, and would like to cool some meat, cheese and yogurt.

12V compressor fridge every time, even if you go for one of the portable ones, at least then you can use it in the car as well.

The ONLY solution if you want to keep things cold longer than a weekend is a compressor fridge. (unless you have a diesel engine then gas fridges are way cheaper to buy and run)

Expect to pay lots for one..... thats the only down side. They also do consume a fair bit of electric so ensure your battery bank is big enough and / or add some solar panels.

They shouldn't use that much Deano, Haddocks revenge only had 2x 110Ah batteries and the outboard for charging and never had any issues with flat batteries, fridge was always the first thing turned on and left on till we put the boat back to bed, a 2 week outing would be no problem as long as plenty of running.
If your freeman has a similar model to my princess they probably use more than a new danfoss powered fridge.

OK... "Fair bit" may have been a bit harsh...... but it is a significant step up for a boat with only a small outboard and only one battery!!!

My current fridge is 3 way, gas,12v and 240v. it usually runs on gas.... 12 volts when tidal and engines running and 240 where I can get it. The previous Freeman had the compressor fridge.... after 2 days with no cruising the battery was feeling it.

We have a Shoreline compressor fridge, I'd guess about 15 years old.
It draws 2.5 Amps when the compressor is running. No idea what the duty cycle is but it will depend on how often you open the door, the ambient temperature, how good the ventilation is at the back and on how warm, the beer is when it goes in there (I think you can put food in fridges too, if there is any room left).

Dave, did you have a drawer fridge on Haddock's? That always struck me as a great energy saver as long as you are careful not to waft out all the precious cold air.

But as stated above, compressor fridges are not cheap but the alternatives are just so much more power hungry.

I did indeed have the drawer fridge, very good on space too as it was below a dinette seat with the compressor in a cupboard beside it.

A good tip is to plan your journey(s) between Nov- Feb. I have found that the 4 cases of beer from the supermarket will last for up to a week without getting warm plus i find the waterways a tad quieter. Might not suit everybody. I tend to travel alone

I've never managed to get 4 cases of beer to last a week, but that was nothing to do with the fridge!!!!

I don't get through 4 cases of beer in a year at home or on the boat! Mind you I do use all the pubs along the way.....

Thanks for all the replies - made for interesting reading. It's an outboard so gas fridge not an option, but think we've solved it with a small, box-type fridge which should hold enough to see us through a few days. Will be on the canals May and September so hoping for warm rather than cool weather! A solar panel is also under consideration, although the leisure battery is quite a big capacity.

I have a fridge that rubs on 240 or 12volt when on 12volt I run it on the outboard charging system when cruising when stopped I use the domestic batteries which are topped up by a solar panel via a
Solar panel controller, solar panel should be as big as you can afford hope this helps.

Hi. I run a Waeco fridge on its own 110 amp hour battery topped up by 100 watt solar panel and shore power when at a marina. I've spent over a week on the boat without problems.

If you look at my fridge and solar panel video on YouTube it'll show your all the details. Just type in Busy with Fizzy or look under my user name consumedbynature.

I have been off for a long time..our poor boat hasn't been touched for more than a year (I am my mums 24/7 carer now).things are finally getting started with Ayup Miduck..we don't have a working fridge aboard atm, the one in there is a small caravan fridge.. before I make a massive faux pas and buy anothether, please could you tell me the issues with a 3way 12/240/gas fridge. I was surprised to hear of a risk. I was unaware thanks Pam
