Has anyone had problems with outboards running rough due to old fuel. My Yamaha 9.9 has had the carb thoroughly serviced however the engine runs like a dog. Fuel Line filtration is v good. Prior to this it has been standing for 2 months.....could it be the petrol which may have gone off.. what is the shelf life of petrol. I hear it is 1-2 months ??
When I bought my 27 it had been used as a live aboard using the 240 shorepower. The engine was rarely started. Like yours it was stop start and splutter. My mate the mechanic turned up, cleaned the filter in the can and the carb then disposed of the old fuel and added new. Problem solved.
If leaving for any length of time I transfer remaining fuel to the car then refill with new next time I use it. You can transfer even year old fuel to the car if you put say a gallon at a time into an almost full car tank.
Anything up to a year old is usually fine but if you have doubts over the fuel then try some fresh stuff to see if it sorts the problem. As stated, old fuel can be diluted with new and/or used in another vehicle.
We have a Norman 18 and have had the same problem with fuel going off. You have to judge it just right so you don't run out - and so you don't leave loads in the tank either!
Thing is, I have a diesel car so unleaded isn't much use. And no-one else wants to risk taking the old unleaded in their car. What do I do with it?
