The search is now on for a second-hand motor for The Boat For My Potplants, and I need all the advice I can get, now that I have a budget. www.aboatformypotplants.blogspot.com

I'd say at least 20hp where you are, and preferrably 4 stroke.

Definitely a 20 - 25HP Neil
You may get by on a 15 for pootling about but you dont want to get into difficulties because of lack of power in yr neck of the woods.
A Stroker (2 stroke) will be cheaper but you wont like the noise / fuel consumption (Plenty for sale in yr price range) A four stroke will be harder to find but possible IMHO.

I suspect unless you are very lucky , you will be unable to get a 4 stroke of 20-30HP in yr budget range.
There are a few 2 strokes on Boats n Outboards in yr price range , I would be careful if buying off ebay as there are a lot of kippers sold via them.
Dunno how much you will use the boat - I know a couple that power their 27ft Viking with a 25HP stroker - On the Soar they find it acceptable (They probably never give it many revs...)
Based on what work you have done to yr boat I reckon you would easily be able to fit an outboard - its a fairly straightforward job !
I guess whatever you get you will find Boatformypotplants 'Tealy' good with a motor

I hate to mention the phrase 'spend some cash' but with what you have already got away with money wise on that boat don't stint on a motor on tidal water if you plan to untie the ropes, I'm all for dulux and b&q financing your blog (and I salute you big time for it) but please don't expect the rnli guys that get no pay(and often lose wages) and risk their lives to save you for a budget descision, that would be nothing less than poor seamanship, take it from someone thats been towed in by them that was technically free but still cost me good money(voluntarily), and I don't begrudge them a penny of it.
Also while I'm pissed and ranting  , make sure the skipper (you) has a good understanding of what you are doing before the ropes let go, sorry if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs but I'm under the impresion you have never actually boated before let alone dealt with tidal water, I'm always happy to be proved wrong (feck I'm used to it).

Thanks for all the advice. Very good advice which I heed with thanks. It's correct that I am a complete novice, and before I do anything I will be going on a course held locally and spend time in the company of experienced 'proper' boating people. And the kind man who runs the courses has agreed to be accompanying me on my boat when it eventually has its maiden, and subsequent, voyages. I don't intend to be going anywhere near the sea. From Wivenhoe to Alresford Creek (about 2 miles along the River Colne) will be my goal for 2012. I won't be taking any chances and will be making safety the number one priority.
