I don't know why Deano's so anti hundred foot, he got a free shopping basket! He also went at the wrong time...
I've used it quite a few time with no bother but also decided against a few times due to timing/weed.

Apart from the Tesco & Free mooring, its not a big sell Deano ! Pump Out ? Kids ? no no no !
How bads the weed on the 100ft - Surely nothing like the Witham I hope ?
To be fair , we would be looking at saving time if we made the trip - which would be the quickest to manic cruisers ?

It all depends on when you arrive at Denver/Salters, if you have to wait half a day for a tide, you may as well go round Ely way.
The weed and rubbish can be bad. It took us 5 hours once and we picked up a shopping basket on the last mile!! We lost all steering and most of our power for a mile or so and we have twin BIG engines!! An outboard would have been dead in the water. At the Denver end we were bumping along the bottom for an hour or so. It's also deadly boring!!!
Late season is probably a no no due to weed. Early on is better. But it does vary from year to year. Spring tides tend to give you more of a push, neeps are bad.

If you're looking to avoid Ely it really does beg the question 'why are you bothering with the Gt Ouse?'
Ely is one of the highspots, certainly of the lower river & to avoid it in favour of a tidal ditch with no water, no moorings, no headroom, no scenery, but plenty of mud is difficult to understand, even if it does save you a few hours.
Oh, & they'll need to remove the fallen tree blocking the navigation near Welney that has been there for several weeks now unless you propose using nothing bigger than a rowing boat!

If we head north - Whats a realistic time to cross the pennines via l&L in a cruiser from leeds (Canalplan excluded - taking into mind we are manic cruisers !)

Neil - London it would be (Reliving the trip via sewer tube that we did 2 yrs ago)
Unfortunately due to th Olympics we will be unable to lock out of Limehouse to make the trip home

Theres a few weeks that london would be well avoided next year, I can think of 52 of them(hate the place).
