Hi all The outboard failed again home on aux engine, Reason water in petrol. The petrol has been stored correctly in petrol cans and tank under cover. Has anyone fitted a water separator / filter to a Norman 23? If so what type and where did you fitted the separator. The engine is a 15hp big foot outboard Thanks in advance Pete
Water seperaters are normally only on inboard diesel setups, not normally an issue if using a plastic portable tank, metal cans are prone to condensation but not if full and sealed, was the water in there to start with?
Water in petrol is not a common thing. It is usually more than just condensation.... a leak or as DF suggested, in there already.
The reason that diesels have a problem with water is that it can cause the bio bug if there is water under the diesel in the tank. Also even a smal quantity of water can cause a diesel engine to hydrolock. This will not occour with petrol as the quantities required will stop the engine long before it becomes a problem.
Hi all Thanks for the advice the petrol tanks are plastic and the petrol bought from two different sources .The tanks have been in used for the past 2 years so. I will pressure test the tanks and check the remaining petrol for water content see what happens. The engine in question had a £300 service and repair less from 15hrs ago run time. Pete
When I first sorted my diesel tanks out rather than dispose of about 90 litres of dodgy fuel I used an old fish tank to settle it all out and pumped the clean settled diesel off the top and only disposing of a few litres of contaminated crap, with the tank propped at an angle it collected all the crap in one corner and you could easily see when it looked clear, admittedly a lot more dangerous with petrol...
Hi all Thanks for all your advice how long should I leave the petrol and water to separate i have put in in sealed glass containers . I intend to put the petrol in the wife Car after cleaning. A small amount ot water will not affect the larger jets in the car. Peter
