Not specifically Norman but as there are a lot of Normans going to be affected so it makes a bit of sense
Our marina has given us all notice to vacate by the end of June so does anyone have a mooring on Lancaster canal availible for a norman 20.
This has certainly come as abig blow to us all and may finish our excellent boating pastime if we cannot find anywhere quick.

There are a number of boaters on the Lancaster over on the Freeman forum, I have cross posted your request there and will report back any leads.
Are they closing down??? or is there another story???

I think he is at BWML site at Galgate,in the last few years I have spoken to people from BW an it seems its their intention to get rid of online moorings,and some online moorings that are still there today would not meet the specs for new moorings.
Also during the auctions for moorings on the lancs most have been for the lenght of narrow boats,I know there have been few exceptions and I mean a few.
The new marina at barton Grange only takes narrowboats I was one of the first to apply for a mooring but a year later was told only narrow boats.
It seems BW want narrowboats at Galgate the sales and moorings area was closed and a only narrow boat area was put in this place.
It looks like Bw want to rid our canal of GRP yet these are more traditional on the lancs than the newer narrow boat replica's. |

Galgate is a nice mooring area with toilets and showers,it was once an office base for BW and has a large car park with barrier.
Before the mooring auction it was the dearest per metre on the Lancaster for moorings available from BW.
As I said above the area now occupied only by narrowboats used to be a brokers site that also made canopies and upholstery all now lost in this area.
I can see what wisdom is saying they might develop for more narrowboat but the size of the site adjacent to the main A6 through Galgate would make BW a large one off amount of money for retail/commercial development.
We need more mooring on the lancaster not less.

Hi all thanks for the replies.
It is Galgate Marina.
Not sure of the reason behind emptying us all (not narrowboats)its quoted as health and safety reasons they have offered alternative moorings at Glasson but is that really what everyone wants????????? |

That sounds better its nice at Glasson,is it all the cruisers along the bank and also on the jettys below the car park.
How many boat are going to be moved?
And why have they not given any idea if and when you might return?
I understand you do not want to move and there are not many moorings at the moment on the Lancs |

Glasson can be a very windy place and is actually more suited to narrow boats than cruisers. Also it will take half a day each way through those ill maintained locks before you can go anywhere on the main line, not withstanding the cost of the extra fuel each time.

thats not good news we were hoping to berth at Galgate according to Trev the care taker it would not be a problem there was a fair turnover of moorings for small boats we had fallen in love with it was my nearest choice living in Ayrshire

the only "health and safety "issue i could imagine at galgate is the narrow/non existant pavement on the busy A6 whilst trying to access the jettys. of course this only became an issue when bw made the basin narrowboats only and closed the safer access to all but the narrowboaters.
historically,ie prior to the ribble link opening the lanky was almost all grp cruisers,indeed they are still the majority type of craft.however there does seem to be some kind of agenda to "gentrify" this waterway with narrowboats.
this has patently failed,as the only loutish behaviour to be found is amongst a group of nbs who constantly overstay at bilsborrow are permanantly and loudly pissed, who constantly hog the 24hr mooring and sanitary station and buzz up and down in o/board tenders.
yet bw seem hell bent on encouraging more of the same to the detriment of the shorter(less revenue) grp cruisers.
there is still a code of conduct/manners amongst the established grp community and amongst many of the nbs,however there is an increasing problem with the behaviour/attitude of many of the latter.
i would venture that the worst thing that happened to the lanky was the opening of the ribble link,the best thing would have been that investment being used to re open the northern reaches.(phew! rant over,for now)

Good post Raymo I totally agree and bilsborrow is because of the long line of Narrowboats a one way system.My last boat was a seamaster 23 9' beam and now I have a Freeman 24 and if if boat is coming from the opposite direction there is no room to sail past.
The nb's moor in a very long continious line, never mind the canal they also take over the footpath with chairs and tables and lots of other stuff with their drinks parties and do not want to get out of the way of people walking past.
As Raymo says It was a lot better before the Ribble link.
I could go on they also hog other mooring areas.

Following this and the BW Stoppage notice about new restrictions in the use of Galgate sanitary station, I have posted the following on the Freeman Forum.
