Hi all, I recently brought a Norman 20 (Advertised this site) and would like to get the engine serviced.
Being new to boating can anyone give me an idea of what to expect to pay for a general service. It runs OK but I'd like to have it looked at just in case.
It's a Mercury Mariner 9.9HP 4 stroke. I believe it was brought new in 1996 so should have lots of life in it yet. The only problem so far is it doesn't like to run idle for too long.

Hi and welcome.
If it's any help i have just bought a new Mariner 9.9 and have to get it serviced by dealer for warranty etc. They have quoted me £70 plus parts and an extra £25 plus parts to fit a new impellor every couple or years. Only parts should be small amount of engine and gearbox oil. Plug he said are only checked and changed if needs be. He said lube service with oils approx £85 and service with impellor approx £130. |

Thanks Knighty, I have been quoted £250 plus parts for a full service but maybe it's a Thames premium. Whereabouts are you based, would be good to get a comparison.

I'm near Evesham in Worcestershire.
Below is link to my local marina with their prices. Slightly different to what he approx quoted but it was off the top of his head as they mainly deal with narrowboats.

Hi All
We have just returned from a few days on the Thames our Mariner 15 hp 2006 cut out on tick over Three times twice on mooring up , once while entering a lock, It restarted ok . On refilling the tank I found some fine fibres in the tank. I installed a larger tank on this year to give a greater range on hindsight could it be P.T.F. E. tape used to seal the push on petrol connector? Next action clean the tank, fuel line strain and inspect the petrol. The engine had been serviced last year but not used much as the engine oil is still clean.

Hi
As above I had some stuff in a tank I acquired even after thoro rinsing etc. In the end to be double safe, i removed the fuel tube inside the can, it has a small filter on the end, and wrapped it in some j-cloth with twist ties to secure it. I dont think anything now can ever enter the fuel line except clean fuel! The cloth doesnt affect the fuel being sucked thru one tiny bit!

I finally took the boat down to the marina for them to have a look at. Thinking this would cost £200+ to get fixed, they did it for free. Must have been a simple problem but they have secured my custom for the coming years.
