My old Honda 9.9 hp was reconditioned around April. Since then it has had about 40 hours running time, mostly in relatively short 3 hour leisure cruises. It starts easily. I always check the oil before each run and it has never needed topping up.

Yesterday it started second pull, as usual. I left it running for the one or two minutes it takes to lower the awning and during that time, it stopped and won't restart. The primer bulb is working, the fuel pump is pumping and the carb is clean and not blocked though I failed to check the little push-in jet that sits above the main jet. Will look at that next time I go to the boat. Is there anything else that fellow owners suggest I ought to check? I'd be grateful for any advice.

Check the pickup pipe inside the tank, I had one that split as it didn't like modern fuel so just sucked air and took ages to find.

Do check the fuel line modern fuels can cause them to deteriorate, the little bits will choke the carb. A new fuel line and filter plus a complete carb clean could do the trick. The old Honda 9.9 is one of the best, they go on for ever, just change the oils, engine and gearbox plus the impeller.

Just another thought. The only thing I have fail is the cdi unit, ingnition control , try tapping the unit with a screwdriver handle. If the engine starts and runs it could be a bad connection inside the sealed unit. A replacement is the only option. Honda parts are very expensive, generic parts are cheaper.

Thanks, all. A new cdi unit was fitted in April. Today I removed the carburetter, checked all the jets, fitted a new fuel filter and new plugs and the motor started and ran. The plugs that came out were very sooty so I'd now like to ask - how many turns out should the mixture screw be set at? It's set at two and a quarter turns out at the moment.
