I am taking CRT to court because of my destroyed holiday last October on the Brecon and Monmouth Canal. Is there anyone who wants to make a statement in support of me. I am not doing this for just me its for all the other boat users on the canal who have the same problem as me. IE not enough water under the boat because it needs dredging. The PDF dimensions of the canal says 1.2m 4ft but in some places there is less than than 600mm 2ft. I am waiting for a court date. Even the hire companies are complaining that their boats are dragging the bottom. I have even spoke to people who have hired boats and will never go on the canal again because they were continually getting stuck. Change the court but still no date |

My local waterway is the Huddersfield Narrow, and has a similar problem. In this case not lack of dredging, but lack of water. I am told by the old salts at my mooring that the CRT are only allowed a certain gallonage of free water by Yorkshire water, and then have to pay for any more.I don't know if this is true or not,but I do know that this canal is rarely full. While wishing you luck with your legal fight,I am writing to the Colne Valley's newly elected MP,to ask if she could raise this matter in high places,[new broom etc] and see if anything can be done. |

Mad Harold Thank you for replying. I was hoping to have more support.I have comments from other users on the Monmouth but they are frightened that the CRT would not give them a license if they fully supported me. |

| Different circumstances there on the Huddersfield Narrow Terry. Privatise water and the greedy companies took over the water supplies for the canals and this is now denied CRT. Not of their making this time. |

I was interested to note that the Lancaster canal at Carnforth appeared full to the brim this weekend - I am aware that there are sometimes similar issues with water depth on this popular Norman cruiser watercourse. Best Wishes, Florian

I have received a reply today to my e mail to my local MP [Thelma Walker]about the low water level in the Huddersfield Narrow canal, and I have posted it in full here. The reasons for low water levels are quite likely common to other waterways.
"I have this morning spoken to Yorkshire Water and the CRT and I have been informed that all of the water for the Huddersfield Narrow canal is supplied from three reservoirs owned by the CRT,Diggle,Sparth, and Slaithwaite. Both the CRT and Yorkshire Water have confirmed that no water is supplied by Yorkshire Water to the Narrow canal. From my conversation with the CRT I have learned that the reason for low levels of water in the Huddersfield Narrow canal is that there is only a set amount of water within these three reservoirs and there are apparently significant leaks within the canal walls and at the locks. The CRT are aware of this issue, and have informed me that they are trying to fix these leaks as quickly as possible, however, these repairs are expensive and the trust being a charity has limited resources. Having said that,I have been informed that they intend to shut sections of the canal this October in order to undertake major repair work to the canal bank in the hope that this will increase the water levels within the canal"
Well, the subject has been raised, and hopefully will be resolved soon. |

They will probably lower the banks so the canal is always full.

Hi Lady thanks for your reply. The court case is 28th Sept at Carmarthen Court. On the 12th of August I went up to the Canal and got some witness statements from boat owners and a Marina owner to back my case up. The CRT have lied many times. They said in 2016 there has been 3000 passages between Herons rest marina and the tunnel with out any problems. Also they say it is dredged to 900mm. So why was I and other boats getting stuck. On the website it said it was 1.4m deep.Because I complained they said they were altering the web site it then said 1.2m.Recently there has been a meeting and I was told they had taken the dimensions of the website. In fact it now says .75m. I have a large file on this case if any one is interested. |
