We were AWOL for a week or so. My apologies! No idea how it happened and am not really clear how it was fixed! Brains larger than mine might know!
All back up and running though.

I just been reading that Dave Flint's feeble excuses, told him I'd tell Mother he's been round the back twiddling with the knobs again.

I hope she grounds him for a hundred years AND takes away his sweeties.

Glad it's all sorted now for you anyway.

Any ideas on this Ian? Nearly every day I have to rename web.config to web.config.htm and then rename back to web.config to get the site working, 1&1 are muttering about disabling .htaccess but surely that's a linux/apache thing, this site is hosted on a windows server with IIS 7.5 which I know very little about, I don't think 1&1 know much more about than I do.
It's not as if the contents of the file are changing just the name, do windows servers have permissions that can be changed like apache does?
I'm lost on it, 1&1 say it's something Trevor has done but I don't think it is.
Any other windows server experts on here?

Nope. It's got me stumped. I'm OK with Linux servers but I know less about Windows server stuff than you do. I've spent a bit of time Googling with no real results.

.htaccess is definitely an Apache thing so 1&1 are BS'ing with that. Windows server must have some scheme for permissions but even if they got screwed up I'd expect them to need sorting once and once only. It's almost as if the file keeps getting restored from a backup or something.

If I was Columbo I'd be pacing up and down in my raincoat and observing the "one last thing" that the hosts made some changes to their FTP stuff around the time that the problem started.

Unless Trevor is secretly uploading that file each day I don't know what else could be causing it.

Ok, here is a bit more info.

Immediately after that post I went to reply to another thread and the whole site timed out with this message:

The page you are looking for is temporarily unavailable.

The time was bang on midnight BST and the problem persisted for about 10 mins on two different PCs. Might be a clue, might be Le Herring Rouge.

However, at 00:16 I typed this post and when I went to post it I got the Error 500.19 we are becoming accustomed to.

So that's a bit weird. The site goes offline for maybe 10 mins, returns for just a few mins then goes offline in a different way until Dave the Saviour(tm) does his thing. The problem has got to be at the 1&1 end.

After lots of musical interludes and "let me go and see what is the matter" countless times, they are elevating it some "specilaist". They said they would be in touch. Dave renamed the file and left it. I've been supporting my local landlord this evening! Is the problem still happening??

I just checked the file list on the server and it's still renamed so the original has not been replaced by a backup and I havn't had to do anything this morning so perhaps the renaming has worked, if it keeps on working I'll delete it completely.

I'm enjoying Dave's naive optimism that it is fixed.
It's like he believes that software is some sort of logical controllable thing that always behaves itself hehehe.

Well it still seems to be behaving, fingers crossed.
A good weekend at the boat was had with a new bssc and a few more jobs done as well as the fuel tanks nearly full, will have to try and squeeze another 70-100 litres in if I can before my 2 week holiday, the joys of a faster boat....
