Doesn't start in gear protection just inhibit the starter motor?

Hey Dave, I'm retired, don't expect me to think!
Probably right, but does it cut the ignition circuit completely including the starter solenoid circuit? i.e whatever goes live if the ignition switch goes on? It won't cut the actual starter motor circuit as the potential loads running through the switch when the starter is running would melt it, so it would only be the feed to the solenoid circuit running through the ignition switch so possibly cuts ignition as well?
I don't have a circuit diagram to hand so the owner can do some work for himself and look at that side of things - I dumped most of the engine manuals when I emigrated! Need different manuals for elephants LOL!

Finally living the dream!

Had the same thing with my N20,Yamaha 9.9.I found that the tickover was too fast and used to engage gear with a bang, frequently stopping the engine, reverse especially as there seems to be more drag in reverse gear.Slowing the tickover to the book figure [900-1000 rpm] fixed it.It now goes into gear quietly and so far hasn't stopped. I too am a newbie and when manoeuvering near very expensive looking boats,I did panic a couple of times, changing from forward to reverse and vice versa, too quickly stopping the engine. If the prop is still turning when you engage the opposite gear it will stop the engine and do the gearbox no good. |
