I have a N23 with a 1998 15hp 4-stroke Mariner outboard that I bought second-hand. As well as the 2 x Heavy Cables that go to -ve and +ve Battery, and another loom that goes to the Throttle/Starter/Choke controls, there are 2 other thinner wires (about 2 metres long, with spade connectors), both brown with a coloured stripe. I have never connected them to anything.
When I recently took the engine for a service, and asked what they were for, I was told "for charging the battery". I have gone through two summers, without any engine starting problems, and at the end of last season my battery still showed 12.6v when I removed it, so the battery must be being charged somehow. Does anyone have any ideas what the 2 x brown wires are for?
Thanks, John

Assuming it's electric start the battery will be charged through the main power leads to the battery, I had a 2000 model 9.9 that was exactly the same engine as the 15hp with a smaller carb, I don't recall an extra loom with 2 wires in, just the main power leads and the remote loom conection. Put a multi meter across the battery and fire it up, if the volts rise it's charging.

As they are not colour coded, they can't be +ve and -ve. Could they be 16V AC for lighting???

Trying to remember as I had a new Mariner 9.9 and that had spare wires which were not used after it was fitted. Think they were for if you had a control panel with a tacho but not 100% sure.
Had a rethink and it was a din type plug on mine which could be connected to a control panel for tacho and engine trim. |

Thanks for your comments everyone. Deano the wires ARE colour coded ... stripes are different colours. The engine will stay in storage once it is serviced, but when I re-install it, I will confirm that the battery is charging as advised by Dave. I will also monitor the two rogue cables and see if there is a voltage across them, but as I plan to do some re-wiring whilst it is out of the water, I would have liked to have known before the boat goes back in the water. Cheers, John

I have answered my own question! I found a wiring diagram that shows the tan/white and tan/black cables going to an Oil-Pressure warning light. That is obviously why it is so long. Now I can incorporate a lamp into the dashboard, as part of my re-wiring. Cheers, John
