If you find out please let me know. I have had all mine out on n23 chrisdanra reassembled with new angled brackets, new flock slider in the channels, and reseated them in non setting compound that is used in caravan windows. Still got a leak on one front window outside bottom corner and both side windows at very back bottom corner.

Don't know what to do next

Good luck

I've owned four boats in total. All have had leaking windows. With the first three I used Sikaflex and sorted the problem. With my current boat I decided to let a professional take the windows out and reseal them. Six months later they were leaking again. I've just Sikaflexed them and they're watertight. I use frogtape and a beading tool for a smart finish. Don't use any other kind of masking tape, they're all pants. Sikaflex is messy to work with but baby wipes (£1 Lidl) seem to clean it off. Wear clothes you don't mind trashing if you use it.

There is footage of Sikaflex on another project on my boat if you want to have a look. Just type in "busy with fizzy" on YouTube.
I've heard Bytul tape is effective but haven't any experience of it.

How this helps

regards

Billy

Sikaflex is a range of products, not a single product. Be careful what you use on what. 291 is what is usually sold in chandleries.
It is generally used as an adhesive, which it is very good at.

A better solution for sealing windows is Abormast BR. It is a liquid butyl sealant. It gets in all the gaps and seals. It does not set hard so remains flexible and is able to absorb the flexing of the boat. Failing that a butyl based tape can be used to great effect between the frames and the GRP of the hull. Search for 'caravan sealing tape' on ebay.

Trying to seal the edges is rarely a good solution.... take them out, clean up the edges and reseal them back to the hull.

Done all that with new brackets at the joints as each one was taken apart and powder coated in grey. I also tinted the glass with film as reassembled. Just wish they wouldn't leak.

Going to try and cover with plastic taped to the body work so frame and glass is covered and hit the boat with water from a hose to see if it is getting in somewhere else but running out at the joint between fibreglass and window frame!

allo kev 13 the deeper I get into this window thing the more I hear problems other have or are having the less confident I am about solving it but there is always a way . I used to be a service engineer on steam turbines and one day on QE2 the boiler feed pump blew its turbine cover gasket and we seal welded it round joint face and machined it off when in for dry docking , motto of this there is always a way but cant weld fibre glass !! but any way thanks for reply will let you all know how I get on.

hi kev I took both side windows out complete and sent them to leeds my frames are in good condition having been anodised etch primed and painted at british aerostructures done during tea and lunch breaks obviously! . they are going to replac all seals glass is ok and fit a seal to go between frame and boat . will take a lot of cleaning due to growth in channels . will let you know how good they are when I get them back. will be lovely if no leaks it puts us off doing work when we have to have drip trays everywhere.IAN

I found the 18's and 20's need an extra strip at the bottom inside the sliding windows as they overflow the inside of the frame before the drains work properly as the cabin sides are quite sloped, also when putting flocked rubber in the sliders cut holes in it where the drain holes are and glue to stop them going out of line or the drains will never work at all.
I used a thin strip of acrylic glued along the bottom on my 18.5 and it worked well.

I agree with DF.
I fitted a thin adhesive backed rubber strip between the internal trim and the frame. Then screwed the trim back on. I have been bone dry ever since.
Again, don't forget to make sure the external window frame drain slots are clear for the water to run away.
