Freeman 22's have been across the channel..... many times... 35hp!!
Hey, people even swim it.... didn't some kids do it a few years ago.
A lot depends on the the weather.

BUT - the effects of the tide in the channel are less than the Bristol channel......

Totally agree with you, it's all down to the vessel, the crew, and the weather. And I am not in any way saying jump in a 27 and go up the Bristol Channel. But I am still curious why Norman specifically said the 27 in not for coastal, yet the 23,24 & 25 were.
The problem is they were built so long ago we will probably never know.

Any way Johnglenys keep us informed how you get on, and good luck with the planned trip however it turns our

Thanks for all the advice and information.I emailed the Gloucester Harbour pilots with all the details of my boat Make, Model, Engine size etc.
Below is the reply from the pilot.

"Given a suitable tide, calm conditions and provided that the outboard motor operates at full power and is without defect then it should be feasible to make the trip from Sharpness to Portishead. Regrettably, there are occasions when vessels which have spent a long time on the canal system suffer a breakdown in the estuary, so it is important that such craft are well prepared and carry appropriate safety equipment. A checklist is published on our website at http://www.gloucesterharbourtrustees.org.uk/marinesafety.html

If you wish to engage an authorised pilot for your proposed trip then I suggest that you contact them directly on 07774 725270.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask!)

I still fancy the idea of the trip, but with other commitments it will probably be 2015.

Will keep you all updated.

Thanks again.
