I think my 20 could do with a bit of weight shifting from aft to fore, can't help feeling that all the weight is at the back, it certainly seems to plane nicer when someone is sat in the cabin.
But the only thing of substance that I could relocate is the battery (It's rather large - 150 or 200 Ah, plus a smaller backup battery). Would it be a bad idea to move the batteries to the front of the boat inside the cabin? I think they can give off hydrogen under certain conditions, which might be a bit of a hazard? |

Don't move the batteries. In addition to the hydrogen hazard it's best to keep battery cables short to avoid voltage drops.
There is a long tradition of adding a few bags of sand/gravel to the front of Normans. Gravel is best as it doesn't attract the damp as much.
The other possibility is to move the water tank up front and endeavour to keep it topped up. |

I'm not worried about the voltage drop, decent size cable will minimise that. It's just the hydrogen thing which concerns me. I will probably just move them as far forward in the cockpit as I can.
I don't have a water tank, and it seems at bit backwards to deliberately add dead weight (like a bag of gravel). |

| Adding sand or gravel is not a backwards thing. Its the long accepted way of correcting trim problems that arise as engines change etc. |

I'm not sure if you are on the sea or inland, but i'm sure the Boat safety scheme would not be too happy with batteries in an unvented cabin.
BUT
As long as there is a vent at the highest point of the cabin, I can't see you ever getting a build up of Hydrogen. It's molecular size is so small it will probably go through GRP anyway!!!
If you are getting a sulphur smell, you are overcharging the batteries.

Adding extra weight is just going to mean it takes more power (and therefore fuel) to keep it on the plane. My batteries never seem to need to go on a charger, the charging coils on the outboard seem to keep it topped up at present.
I might investigate fitting a vent tube, as that should make it safe.
And Tigtog, I think I've seen pictures of your boat on here - is is a N20 with some kind of cabin extension? It looks quite interesting, is it a DIY job or was it a factory option? |

I'd be interested to see those pics. |
