Can anyone help?
Would there be any problem cruising the Norfolk Broads in a narrow beam Norman 27ft? Would any where be out of bounds or unsafe?

Hi guys
we took our Norman 23 to the broads in August, its narrow at 6ft and we had no problems at all, in fact she performed superbly. We have a Honda BF 15hp four stroke and we had a 25ltr tank & a 15ltr tank of petrol and it more than lasted the week, we did a fair bit of cruising every day.

Thanks Happy chef. I was wondering about mooring on the Broads for a season or two. Locks are playing hell with my sciatica |

Failing that John - Move her up onto the Ashby, closer to home & plenty of lock free miles & also when you do hit locks the're all narrowbeam.

Theres nothing on the broads that would give you any trouble, if going from north to south or visa-versa just time it right at yarmouth (1-1.30hrs after low water) and you'll be fine, remember to turn into the tide before mooring and it's all much easier.

The only "problems" you will encounter are the lack of petrol availability on the riverside, but good planning and a large can should see you OK. There are a number of known petrol stations in walking distance of the river. Stalham is one I know of.
The other problem is the hire boats.... be prepared to fend off actively and get involved with mooring their boats safely. (A lot!)
Other than that, its hassle free cruising..... may even see you there.... we are planning to spend the summer there too. (Just don't tell DF!!)
Oh.... make sure you know which way to turn when transiting Yarmouth.... one way leads to the sea... not a good plan in a narrow beam boat!!!

I pay £260 a year for nav licence on 31' boat and £1100 ish a year for moorings on the southern broads, there are no real facilities where we moor, just a water hose if you can get close enough and a bog, they do lift in/out though.
Licence fees are done on square metres so narrowbeam boats win out.
Beer is cheaper than we were expecting as it's not the tourist trap it used to be, southern is much quieter than the northern broads so easier to get moorings, the bigger hire fleets are based north.
No locks is a big advantage and you can save on fuel if you time your trips with the tides.
I carry fuel to the boat myself as I don't like riverside prices so with removable outboard tank it's not realy an issue.

Hi i live in beccles on the southern broads there are plenty of 24 hour moorings to stay on and a few visitor moorings which you have to pay,its no problem cruising it is better to go with the tide to save fuel,in beccles we have morrisons garage within walking distance also in norwich
you can more or less moor outside morrisons garage which is a 2 minute
walk,i have a 15hp honda 4stroke with a 22 litre tank, i can get to norwich from beccles om one tank with some left, ialso carry several 5litre car type containers which are easier to carry. i hope you would love cruising on the broads, |

oh forgot to mention try galleaon storage in beccles they take your boat
in and out as many times as you like at no extra charge at 5 minutes
notice and store it on purpose built stands, also electric and water are free also 24hr cc camera and lightin , for example i pay 82 pounds per month for a 20 foot norman this system also means you do not have to anti foul so much as the hull stays clean hope this helps. |
