Hi,any ideas how long 4 star petrol lasts,when in fuel system on boat.
As have 4 gallons in my tank
,about 3 years old,wondering if this causing me trouble boat running rough.
Thinking about draining the petrol out[or as i like to say liquid gold,and refilling with fresh. |

I guess you mean Unleaded??? It depends on many factors..... is there any chance there is some water in it?? Probably from condensation inside a sealed tank.... that will kill it!!! Usually a year is enough to cause problems.
Is it mixed with 2-stroke oil, in which case - months.
Best plan is to dump it into the wife's car when the tank is about half full and replace the boat fuel with new.

| Personally, if fuel has been left for a long period of time, I would also clean out the carb, fuel lines etc etc. |

Yep,is 4 star,have a local garage sells it,,how much,,,
Am going to drain tank,and refill few gallons.
I have another post on here regarding a carb.
Taken carb of boat, and dismantles at home,the fuel was contaminated with water,,, so will service carb,refuel,and see how that pans out...

Real 4* should way outlive modern unleaded, but I doubt the modern 4* replacement is the same formulation as the old 1970's 4*
If there is water in it, the age of the petrol is irrelevant.... it's toast!!!
There are additives that attempt to remove the water, you could also siphon it out into milk bottles and try to separate the water out, then re-siphon the clean petrol off. But I guess it depends on how much you have and what risk factor you work at......... there is a fair chance you will blow yourself up trying to clean it!!!!!

When we went from inboard to out board - I drained the tank into jerrycans (Fuel was 4* & unleaded plus additive).
We had the same prob - water in fuel.
As a tightwad risk taking fool conscientious environment friendly person I decanted the fuel into large clear jugs - water sinks to the bottom & u can save most of it.
However, pls dont do this near any combustion point & do it in the open !
If you blow up, I obviously got lucky
