...I need more practice with this boating business, and I need more confidence. I've put the reasons why on my blog www.aboatformypotplants.blogspot.com

Its all part of boating !!
However - As you are very new to it !! & seem to have problems with the outboard cutting out - A quick question....
Have you unscrewed the vent on the outboard tank ???????
This may be your problem !

Thanks Adi Yes, I did do that before we set off, and there was plenty of fuel in the tank. It seemed to cut out when I went from forward to reverse at low revs. Maybe I hadn't revved up the engine enough before setting off. Being inexperienced I just don't know. Nearly wanted to give up yesterday, but I will keep trying. Thanks for your suggestion - it does help with the confidence.

Sounds like it's just ticking over a few rpm too slowly. Wasn't this the lump you were more or less given? Why not ask them then?
But I'd say turn up tickover a bit.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

Also may be Mixture related - When we fitted the Honda , it was fine until hot , then would be lumpy on tickover cutting out - Checked mixture / air screw - Too rich !

may not be your problem, i filled my plastic petrol tank nearly to the top, the engine was fine when revving, but lumpy and stalling at idle , once the tank was a bit lower on fuel engine ran ok. does sound like your idle needs picking up a bit |
