Just a quickie...Ooooooo errrrr misses!! going to look at some outboards over the weekend, what is the best type for my 23, long or short shaft, or dosen't it really matter?

Thanks for that, without sounding stupid and as I'm new to it all, why is a long shaft better, dosen't that mean I'll be catching the bottom more in shallow places like where I moor?
Boat is used on non tidal Thames near Kingston etc.

No, it needs to clear the keel or something like that. All to do with transom size but we'll not go there!

A short shaft will have the prop shielded behind the hull, it needs to be in clear water to work properly.

Being a big'ead - it's called being in a clear "swim" of water meaning the water flows under the hull to the prop unimpeded by any of the hull.

One ignores the keel in this scenario.

The horizontal plate above the prop on an outboard is called the anti-cavitation plate and should be roughly at or 25mm below the bottom of the hull. It stops the prop pulling down air from the surface or forcing it's effort into the shallower and thus less dense water above the prop and losing effect.


The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids!
