My Mariner 9.9 is only 14 months old and under warranty but late last season i had a spell of turning the ignition key and nothing happening, turn it back on and it fires up and runs all day fine. Had a word with marina i bought it from as they are service agents for Mariner and as it was only intermittant that would check it over on it's annual service in April which they did and has been fine until about a week ago. When i try to start it for the first time from cold i have to keep turning key from on to off for about 10 times before it turns the starter, after that you can turn engine off as many times as you want it fires up first time every time until the next day you want to use the boat. There is a fully charged battery and when i turn the key to start the boat i can hear a click in the outboard and another solenoid click when i press the key in for the electric choke so i know there is power to the outboard.
I know it's under warranty but when i will be taking the boat to them which is only 10 minutes downstream it will start fine for them , does this sound like an intermittant starter motor fault as assume the clicking on the key is the starter solenoid engaging.

Sounds like defective starter solenoid.

The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids!

I had exactly the the same problem with my Mariner 9.9, at 18 months old. (spooky) It was the bolts holding the starter motor on had come loose and not providing a consistent earth.

Thanks for replies, will pop hood off and have a look for anything loose around the starter area before taking it down to marina.

Strange that after the first initial start delay it's fine for the rest of the day, maybe the vibration make a better contact.

Edit, just popped down the boat and the starter looked secure but gave the bolts a tweak just in case but think i have stumbled on the problem.

The remote shift lever has a safety micro switch so the engine can only be started in neutral but if i raise the idle lever which i normally raise up for cold starting you hear an audible click of a switch when just under half way raised. Below that click it starts first time raise the lever higher and after hearing the click it won't start.
Think it might want some kind of adjustment as users manual says raise idle lever right up to assist cold starting. That would explain why it starts every time when warm as only use the neutral idle lever for cold starting.

Think i'll let the marina take the remote apart and have a look.

Hi all
On my mariner 15hp about 5 years old. The choke is enabled by pushing the key up and turning, just turning the key will start the engine without the choke. The engine will only turn over if the engine is in the water and in neutral Pete
