Maybe one for Dave (Unfortunately on his way to the Broads) 0r Clive!
A old Honda BF15 outboard with CDI problems - CDI available from Honda UK at a price that rivals gold by the ounce. Similar part from the USA at the price of Silver.
Or a Motorcycle CDI at the price of Scrap Steel !
IIRC the BF15 is a twin cylinder that is in effect a 'Big Bang' motor - ie a twin that both cylinders fire together (Single spark) so - Would a Single cylinder CDI unit (ie off a motorcycle) work ?
Plenty of CDI's available that fit the part on the internet - same plug fitting etc (The late Honda's have decompression & rpm advance , but I dont believe the early ones have)
IMHO - Fitting a 'pattern' CDI shouldnt cause any damage , it just wouldnt run correctly ?
Answers on a postcard , or the forum !

It's highly likely that a bike one would do it but getting the right one or right wiring will be hit and miss, some of the chinese bikes and quads are honda copies and the full ignition system is dirt cheap but not very long lived, would probably fare better if the cdi was resin filled as they rattle. I bet honda use similar wiring colours on both bike and outboard but the chinese stuff is whatever wire was laying around.

Well not exactly perfect !
But - A straight plug in - Starts perfect , & runs under load perfect.
However Tickover is a little lumpy , this may be correctable with a carb tweak.
I will almost certainly buy a new honda unit to replace mine , but I can highly recommend this cdi as a spare 'Get you home' to have aboard.
The cost ???
£5.99 plus p&p !!!!

Does it rattle if you shake it? If so squirt it full of resin or even just silicon and it will probably last longer. At that price why not buy another 2 and leave the honda one till you are on the last cheapo one.

Well so much for the cheap fix!!!
Two miles down stream it developed a terrible misfire almost like fuel starvation. A quick kiss & prayer on the old Honda cdi , coupled with a swap and off we went. Glad I have ordered a Honda cdi from the US now !!
I guess you gets what u pay for. Hope we can get home on the old one !!
Guess it's too hot in the uk for the chinks at the mo !!!

Recieved my new CDI unit from Boats.net (USA) today , high shippage costs for such a small part (10 day delivery) but much cheaper than buying in the UK (Half Price!)
I suppose I will receive a invoice from customs for the VAT in due course
Now I have a shiny black new one I will attack the old one to see if I can find the dry joint.
If I had time & finances , I'm sure there is a pattern part that will do the job

From the States it's usually 5-9% import duties and 17.5% Vat on the total cost including postage. I used to import quite a few things in my car modding days and usually allowed 30% extra to compare costs as they add the vat after they add the import duty. Sometimes thing are posted and classed as gifts and are tax exempt so you might be lucky if it's a small item. |
