high chums
can anyone tell me please the size of the transom on a mk4 norman 22 and should the outboard be long or short,i recentlyput a new short shaft 15hp engine on but its not proving to be working ok,no power to push the boat along faster than 6mph at 85% throttle

Not that I am any sort of expert, but long shaft is required for Norman 22/23/24.
I am sure there are more qualified people on the forum to confirm this, but I understand this is the case.

Your boat requires a long shaft motor due to the distance between transom top and bottom of the hull. This is the case with all Normans having the deep-vee hull - whether 18's, 20's, 22/23's or 30's.
You need to change your engine I'm afraid - to a long-shaft.
The engine will cavitate and not deliver full thrust because it is not deep enough in the water. On all boats the anti-cavitation plate above the propeller on an outboard or out-drive should be about 1 inch or 25mm below the bottom of the boats hull so it is in clear water.
So to establish what motor is needed on any boat simply measure from top of transom to bottom of hull.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

Hi woodbastwick would be interested on how you get on with
your 15hp parson this was my choice of engine at the moment havn't bought it yet but they are a good price, (honda and mariner) keep pulling at my heart strings but my total refurb of my norman 23 has been costly, as I said the parson would save me some dosh in they engine department I am looking at the 15 longshaft electric start unit

Let us know how this performs. Been looking at this one as my Honda is forcibly retiring. The only thing that puts me off at the moment is the "Made in China" bit, having experienced some problems before with goods originating from here.

the parsun outboard is fantastic,put the short shaft on in jan 2011,only had 2 year warranty,the new engine now comes with a three year warranty.I had no trouble with the engine,cept being the wrong shaft size!!!!!not the engines fault tho.very economical.
The parsun engine is a yamaha clone,and every engine is run for an hour before leaving the factory in china.Bill higham marine in manchester are the uk importers and are very helpfull.

I was talking to the importers the other day Wal, and you're right.....very helpful. I didn't particularly want a 15 HP but a 10 with remote control. The lady there was great, she told me that there was a 10 coming on stream with RC and that they would be here in about 6 weeks and at a very good price, less expensive than their 9.9 with tiller !! Lets put it like this, i've been offered a 6 yr old recon Honda 10 HP with RC but it is still more expensive than the new Parsun. Guess what I ordered !

well i guess the parsun???
im selling my engine complete with new p/tank,control box with elec leads ,new fuel line and 11 months warranty for around £1400

Did you make the choice on the short shaft ?
I'd be pretty miffed if it was recommended by a outboard supplier

hello Woodbastwick. Been reading your post re Parsun 15 with some interest. I have just bought one and i am trying to figure out the linkages to my existing set up. I know I will need to change from a Honda to a parsun but seem to think that something is a missing. Could you by any chance post some pics of your linkage set up.DF seems to think it may be a pivot pin thats gone astray...I think he may be right.
