hello everyone.i have just bought my first boat a norman 18.5 it needs a full internal rebuild and a lot of paint but i want to make sure it floats ok with no leaks before i rebuild it am i alloud to put it on the water to check it out without having the bss or anything.thanks gary
Officially you will need a bss and licence to launch your boat but just for a test out you are unlikely to get any problems, there won't be many BW people about at this time of year as they use a lot of seasonal volunteers, just go for it.
As Dave says, if you are just chucking it in and dragging it out the same day to check engine works and it floats you should have no problems.
You don't say where you are, but I wouldn't be planning on going through any manned locks on the Thames without a licence. Although there are 1 day transit licences that don't need a BSS.
I had a boat on the Thames at Hampton Court (very posh - the place, not the boat!!) for quite a few months with no licence or BSS... just stay away from locks.
My tender licence has never made it to the boat in the two years we have had it. Never been questioned.
I wouldn't risk it on the Broads other than out of the way. Too many patrols.
A lot of the locks are closed on the Thames for maintance /upgrade works . This is a pain for boats that moving to new mooring . I have seen boats trapped until the Spring. Pete
