Good Afternoon,
First of all I have got to admit that I am here under false colours--- I own a Dawncraft so if you want to keelhaul me and throw me off the forum I will get my coat [or should it be life jacket????]
{I was a member of the Dawncraft forum but because of a joke??/post in very bad taste I have decided to leave}
My boat is a 25ft Dawn craft propelled by a 1.5 bmc diesel engine. At the moment I am based on the Norfolk Broads but next year [health willing] I want to bring her [Penguin] to the lower Grand Union canal, if I can find a mooring.My first love is the cut

Hi Stopper and welcome to the nuthouse, I know the joke you mean and I doubt you'll find much difference in sense of humour amongst the folks here, it's just we don't have a joke/virtual pub here.

Daves right , we do have a 'Strange Sense of Humour' to some , although it's usually directed at each other !

I do have a sense of humour At 5ft 1in in hight Snow White said I needed one.adi - n-chez I mean the lower Grand Union as in Cowley/ Uxbridge/Slough Arm.The river Soar is nice-cruised it about 30 years ago, but I live the Kent side of Dartford tunnel /bridge and want to avoid using it, had to use it to go to Norfolk Broads and 4 out of 5 times the last 10 miles from the A12 would take about an hour because of congestion on the bridge .With the places named above I can go round anti clockwise and if there is congestion there are other routes I can take.DF /Adi thankyou for the welcome. |

Hi Brian
If you decide to moor on the lower GU next year there are usually moorings available where I moor. If you have access to Google Earth and put in the nearest post code UB96PG then pan left (West) you can see what is obviously a sewage plant with boats moored alongside. Moorings are actually on the River Colne which is non navigable beyond the moorings so you only need a BW licence if and when you move onto the canal. Each mooring has reasonably priced electricity available. Disadvantages are 1. Nearest fresh water is down canal to next lock. 2. sometimes a slight smell from the sewage works. 3. No vehicle access, nearest parking 10 minutes walk along towpath from moorings.So if you have heavy items to put on board you either move the boat to the car park or use a wheelbarrow. I have a BW Explorer licence so I take the boat to the car park mostly.
The moorings are fairly priced for the area at 50p per foot per week plus VAT payable at 6 month intervals.
The nearest moorings downstream are at Harefield where there is a huge marina (Harefield Marina) where you can sometimes park next to your mooring and there is fresh water and a chandlery but electricity is not readily available. I believe that moorings are at least half as much again on what I pay.
Both are within one days sailing of London.
Access to where I moor is only available by key and if you wanted to have a look sometime I would be happy to show you around if we can arrange a suitable date to meet.
If you go lower to Cowley I believe there will be a further premium to pay on mooring fees.
