Hi all, we are starting to kit out our Norman 18 and as we live Southend on sea area we have the opportunity to use the Thames and Medway costal rivers, as this area is very tidal and full of sand banks ect we don't want to chance it till we know whats underneath us and where we are. Dose anyone have ant suggestions re GPA/Fish finders ect, We are on a tight budget and as we will only venture out occasionally into the Thames as most of our weekends out will involve trailering Victoria around to various rivers and canals its just handy for a day out as its very local.

I wouldn't fancy that area without a good chartplotter with charts but they don't come cheap, even then the sand moves, depth sounder is a must but don't forget a vhf as well.
May see you that way next year if the summer goes well, I fancy a trip round to the thames.

Have a look at MyHarbour.com They sell UK charts on a dongle, complete with Seaclear software about £50.00. or about half that on CD.
You can use this with a cheap USB GPS abt £25.00. On a netbook/laptop. Use mine on an Asus Netbook. ex.ebay. it's good gear. Asus have SSD no disc drive, no moving parts take plenty of rough usage.( carry this around on a daily basis as a Pilot, and use on my boat, survived a few knocks and drops.)
Tidal software, have a look at Belfield Software Tide Plotter, not a freebie but not mega bucks.
If no echo sounder use a log line. Cheers. |
