I know this might sound daft but is there anything in a Carberetor that can wear out, I know nothing at all about engines but a budding mechanic working on my Yamaha out'board says that a certain brass part that lets the engine idle is worn out, it just keeps on running high as soon as starting up ' can anyone tell me if he is right.
Like anything mechanical parts wear out, i believe there is a float inside and the linkages can wear out. Might just be gunked up, might be worth just getting a gasket kit for it and giving it a good clean out.
On my old 4 stroke 9.9 mariner the butterfly valve started sticking slightly open after a few years usage causing it to not return fully to idle, I was planning on putting the 15hp carb on anyway so didn't look any further into it just put up with it for a few weeks. I'm guessing it a bit of wear either on the butterfly itself or in the carb bore that could probably be polished out to stop the sticking. Yours may be a different problem but worth looking at, would need to see it first hand realy.
Hi there, I would agree with Knighty and purchase a carburettor overhaul kit. Carbs are sraight forward to work on but all ways a good idea to take pictures or draw a diagram of where every thing is before you start pulling it apart. Also another little wrinkle is to dismantle the carb over an old towel so that any parts that you drop, and you will, will be contained by the towel. Best of luck.
