Hi, have purchased an old Norman 23 Mk1. The gas locker is screwed to the floor with four screws that are silicone sealed. Will this pass the boat safety inspection? I have my doubts so can anyone let me know one way or the other. Cheers, Alan.
Why not? The requirement apart from the construction material of such a locker is that it be secure, gas-tight and have a bottom vent draining over the side but above the water line. It should also be high enough to cover the valve, have a cover to prevent mechanical damage, and the bottle should not be able to move around and tug at pipework.
Many thanks Clive and Trev. Was worried as boat safety stuff says there should be no holes in the gas locker "tank". I asumed that if screwed down and sealed then that would comply but as there is no way of confirming the "tank" to be gas tight I thought an inspector may fail it. It already has a gas safety drain within 1" of tank bottom and we are rigging up a "downhill" pipe from this through the stern above waterline so we should be OK hopefully.
The gas locker must not contain the boat's batery, in case of fire, and if possible should be well away from the battery box which should also have a protective lid or cover.
