hi, folks. the engine on my norman 32 starts o.k. off the key but once running it revs out of control and wont stop unless i "choke" it with my hand over the air intake. the pump is a bosch on an om636 inboard diesel and i'd really appreciate any advice about it. many thanks, jud.
There is probably a governor inside the pump. Its possible the governor spring is broken. you will have to have the pump looked at by a diesel pump reconditioner. Ring Peter Slater 01724 855214. He's (old school) good on old engines.
What that sounds like is an air leak, check your system over and bleed it out properly before you go any further or you could be throwing away good cash unnecessarily.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids!
I have had another thought about your problem. If it has got an inline pump its possible the rack in the pump maybe stuck. If it is inline there should be a plate on the side which you can remove and see the rack. Another thought is if it has started using oil it could be running on engine oil that has got past the piston rings. Hope this helps Bob
