ive been reading some quite disturbing stories of dejon 14 ownership previous owners have said that there very unstable and handle very badly in anything but flat water one guy apparently lost his father and brother in 5ft on water when his dejon capsized in a harbour !!! anyone on here know any good things about them im starting to regret buying her now !!!

I guess you have read the stories on the world sea fish forum ?
Does make disturbing reading , however we dont know if the hull was altered.
If its in fair nick (ie floatable) I would dip in in a BW owned river first - You can get a short term river licence (1 day) without a BSS as long as you have insurance & sign that the boat is safe (Well that was the case the other yr)
That way it may dismiss or confirm the stories of unstability , There was a Norman 22/23 capsized a few yrs ago with a large party aboard , something that would be unheard of in normal use.

yas thats where i read that story very disturbing !!! have been reading up on them and cant find any good reviews yet but i guess a lot of it is common sense ie dont take it to sea 4 up in a force 5 !! thanks for the advice :)

Its fairly unrelated , but a good mate of mine recently bought a 17ft Canadian canoe with the plans of us fishing in unnavigable parts of the Soar. We have a good mate who has been a Scoutmaster who told us 'What a great buy , you will never tip one over'
2nd trip fishing , over it went in Seconds !! Like you , we have now Googled it & found horror stories - But I guess we will still be out nest weekend albeit a bit more carefully !

Take away the cabin on a DJ14 and i's only a small boat! It is not and never would be sea-worthy, calm sheltered waters only. Treat it as you would any other 14 ft boat, load people carefully, everyone stays seated, balance the trim with the bodies. Having a cabin does not make it a cabin cruiser, it just means there is a cuddy 2 people can slide under, note slide, not get up and walk!
Of course it is unstable, it's small! I'd limit it to two people, one either side and treat it with common sense. Four people and that's definitely it and watch the trim.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |
