Hi there
This may seem a silly question! But I am going to my boat tomorrow that had a new starter motor fitted but wont turn engine.
How will I know if the engine has seized? Any ideas? not an engineer! I can pull the cord easy enough but at this point it will not fire up.

| Hi Paul. First of all you need to know if the starter will work off the engine. Secondly is there power coming to the starter motor leads when the ignition switch is activated?. Thirdly with the engine cover off can you turn the starter ring by hand? A simple test lamp , 12 Volt of course, with show if the wiring circuits are OK. Hope that this might help. |

Also - when I use the electric start it turns slowly _ I did not want to hold the ignition longer in fear of buring out the starter motor. It seems as though either not enough power going to the starter or the engine is too stiff for the starter motor to turn.

someone will know better than me but for what its worth.if you can pull the cord (there should be some resistance)its not seized.If it turns over on the key but slowly,the battery may not be fully charged.have you opened the vent on the fuel tank?have you primed the fuel(a bulb on the fuel line that you need to squeeze a few times)so that fuel is in the engine.
if a hammer wont fix it,it must be electrical. |

Thanks - Hope it's not seized! It's a new battery, New starter and I changed the fuel tank! I am not convinced the fuel is getting through! Any ideas - can I spray some into the carb?

I would suspect the battery
Check Voltage at stop (No draw) & when cranking

I would second Adi, if it is fuel starved it shouldn't affect the engine turing over properly. Maybe borrow another battery and try that, also check the connections to the battery are making a good contact.
Take any connections to and from battery apart, clean them up and reconnect, might just be a bad connection. |

Try replacing the battery leads if all else is ok, a seized motor will not turn by any means, you could always try a set of jump leads first but go direct to the starter soledoid, another trick to test the solenoid itself is to short it straight across with a screwdriver but there will be sparks so don't spill fuel first.
