Posted - 02 Dec 2014 : 13:51:47 When I bought my N23, the previous owner told me that he always removed the Original-Build cooker from the boat for his BSS tests as it did not have a flame failure device, and was therefore non-compliant. I believe he was mis-informed, because I think that Original-Build equipment does not have to comply. Is that right?
However, I am in the process of installing a new cooker (with flame-failure devices). I have replaced all the copper tube, replaced the Regulator and LP hose from the Gas Bottle on the transom, and installed an easily accessible isolator and a leak-detection fitting.
However I am unsure about the use of flexible hose to make the final connection to the cooker. Is it mandatory or "permissible" to have flexible hose, or can it be completely hard-plumbed, as I have done? The Inspector will have access to all the fittings.

Posted - 02 Dec 2014 : 17:43:14 Can be, but doesn't have to be. If the cooker/fridge/water heater is fixed down then there is no requirement to have a hose. It would probably be better if it didn't. Always assuming the connection can be made with the appliance and fixed piping in place. The addition of flexible piping introduces more points of failure (and inspection). The only real reason to have flexible hose if if your cooker is in gimbals to enable it to be used at sea. The usual reason is because the connection is on the back of the cooker and totally inaccessible when the cooker is fitted in place.
