Our Norman 27;fitted with a Perkins diesel and z drive is fitted with a ridiculous , small steering wheel, trying to turn the boat requires some heft on this little wheel but,on our mooring lives second 27;and this is fitted with the same size/ type of wheel , does anyone know , were these small wheels a standard fit ? One noticeable problem is that there is not a great deal of clearance between said wheel and the side of the cabin so could a slightly bigger one be fitted ?

Have you crashed your boat into a hedge Trevor?

I've got at least three spare wheels Dave. Intended selling them but never got around to it! That one was off my first boat. Don't you recall the saga of trying to get my new (Dipped, stripped, sanded millions of times and varnished another million) one to fit?? An engineer lad from the site, who's boat we managed to sell, came, measured up and made me a cracking adapter. |

Try fitting a steering ball.Easy if you have a car type wheel, but if you have the spikey sort it will need a bit of packing. Kept trapping my hand between spike and cabin side. |

He was modifying the boat's galley, ran out of wood so recycled the front porch and a garden gate. That's not a hedge, it's a very large pot plant lol.

Finally living the dream!

My 27 has a very small wheel and turns very easily. But I have an outboard so i'm using a morse cable with a piston to steer a Honda 15 with an add on rudder. Know nowt about diesel or z leg set ups. Is there something binding somewhere. Know what you mean though, 40 years ago i bought a second hand MGB GT, (don't ask) it was fitted with a wheel off a go kart i think lol. Popeye would not have got it round our estate.

When I had my RLM it was a regular cable helm gear with 3.5 turns lock to lock with 2x enfields on the back end and it wasn't perticularly hard to turn, you may have a knackered cable or seized outdrive, try disconnecting at the back and see if it turns ok with no outdrive connected, try the outdrive by hand too as it should be fairly free to turn.

Steering on my N20 was as stiff as old boots.Got the grease gun on the outboard pivots and dismantled steering gearbox. It was full of muck and hard grease.Cleaned it out with white spirit and re-packed it with fresh grease.Made a tube from gaffer tape held tight on the steering cable with a cable tie.Kept filling the tube with gear oil and waited (several times)for the oil to percolate down the cable, and got fed up after an hour or so,but managed to get a fair quantity of oil down the cable. Have fitted a steering ball as I mentioned earlier, and the difference to the steering is quite amazing.I can now flick from lock to lock very easily. Doing all this work was a right pain, but having silky smooth steering made it worthwhile. |
