First winter as a boat-owner. I look at the boats moored near to mine and though nearly all of them have been covered with tarpaulins in the last couple of weeks, suggesting that their cruising season is at an end, they all still have their outboards in place. I would have thought the motors could come to a bit of harm in freezing weather. How important is it to remove the outboard for the winter?

I've left outboards over winter before and been frozen into a marina pool without any damage happening, they will always be better locked safely in a garage somewhere (depending on where you live) but if you want to use the boat over winter it's a real PITA.
The only water left in the leg should drain down naturally to the waterline and it's rare for the river to freeze over.
