My boat's a 1973 Norman 23 and it has the one-piece GRP windscreen as shown in the photo.

Can anyone tell me the air draught of the boat (it's still on the seller's mooring at the moment so not easy to get to and measure it myself).

I'm making provisional arrangements for a mooring on the Staffs. and Worcs. Canal. Today the postman delivered my copy of the Nicholson Guide and I see that the canal's "maximum headroom" is 6 feet. I assume that "maximum headroom" is the same as "air draught" and I'm worried that my boat might be too tall to navigate my preferred Canal!

Go onto the CRT website and you can find dimensions of canals. But it is not always accurate.

Thanks for that advice, Stratford. The CRT gives the same dimensions - 6' 0". I think I'm going to have to go and measure it, unless a fellow Norman 23 owner can give me chapter and verse!

It would depend on engine type, water & fuel tank size/position/level, ballast, no two boats are the same so best to measure the boat yourself.
Bridge heights tend to be given with a bit of safety clearance (but don't bank on it).
With enough throttle any boat will go under a 6' bridge, it's just the repairs that get in the way.....

My original 23 was the same as yours Tom but had a ford inboard engine with an enfield outdrive and a couple of chunky sacks of sand in the bows. I needed 6'8" to show on the board to get under Potter Heigham Bridge. This gave me at least an inch clearance, likely more as I took it through myself which needed a modicum of bravery! So the actual air draft was likely around 6' 6" maximum.
Hope that helps.

Hi Tom.
I'm on the Staffy and my 23 has the same screen as yours.
There are quite a few low and awkward bridges on the way to Stourport from the marina but she'll go under them with care. I've scraped them a few times when it's been windy but I can also take the screen off easily as it's only held on with 4 bolts and wingnuts.
Hope that helps,
Jud.
p.s. where are you mooring yours?

We're on the Ashwood Tom, so hopefully see you around.
Our boats called Yerwot, moored by the bridge.
Got some good neighbours, you'll be made welcome.
Jud.

Jud - we went to Bridgnorth yesterday and on the way back I passed by Ashwood so I could show my wife. We stood on the bridge so I could show her the cruiser moorings and... I took a photo and your boat's right at the front. What a coincidence.

All being well, our boat will be there a week tomorrow. (Fingers crossed). Yes - sure to see you there at some time.

Also had a look at my windscreen while visiting to see what the previous owner had left on her and we have 4 wingnuts too. I didn't realise the screens came down so easily.
