So, daft question time.
Is there any reason I shouldn't mount an outboard off-centre for the purposes of an initial trial of boat and engine?
We have a long shaft engine and a short-shaft transom. If we're happy with everything I'll modify the transom but apart from the steering and the weight imbalance is there anything else I need to worry about with an off-centre outboard? I should stress that this is at canal speeds so we won't be water skiing or planing or anything.
Oh, and has anyone got a spare remote adapter bracket for an old Honda outboard? I've got the steering and remote cables but I can't bring myself to shell out for the proper Honda adapter kit. I feel a bit of fabrication coming on. Any pics of the official bracket in situ would be most welcome... |

As long as you can make the cables fit I have a quicksilver single lever remote, it normally does mercury/mariner cables but I think you can get end kits for standard 33c cables, I have to find it to check condition but I think it's the crap one I sold so should be ok.
Apart from offset steering as you already mentioned theres no reason why not, there's plenty of raggies puttering around the broads with an offset aux outboard.

I'm OK for the lever and cables (cables are a bit long but...)
Hanging loose at the engine end we have a steering cable, a throttle cable and a gear cable. It's the bits to convert a tiller outboard into a remote one that I'm lacking and too tight to buy. As ever, I'm trying to do things on a budget. There is no rush for this stuff - the trial will be with the tiller controls.
Everyone loves a project!

Here ya go.
A trial of our new toy, a 16 footer of unknown make soon to be named Bibbo. Just a few ups and downs on a short length of the restored Stroudwater Canal.
Smooth launch, engine fired up OK, everything lovely until a fault developed where the engine would cut out whenever I engaged forward gear but not when I engaged reverse. A bit of a head scratcher.
After playing with a few different rev levels and stuff I took off the cover and observed that the gear mechanism was slightly moving a cable whenever it went forwards. That cable led to the kill switch. A bit of fiddling later and we were back in business (we had taken oars, just in case  )
Recovery was a bit faffy because we could not see the trailer bunks in the water so it took a few goes to find the optimum trailer depth and boat position. We'll get better with practice. Next time our equipment list will include a bucket to swill down the trailer as we've currently got more than a little silt on some of the cross-members.
All in all an excellent few hours. So now it's back to the driveway for a few jobs:
Raise the transom to suit a long shaft outboard.
Remove the two stern "tube things" and fill the holes they leave.
Secure the roof hatch.
Secure the cabin.
Convert the engine to remote operation. Quite a biggie this one, especially as I want to do it on a budget.
