Hi, my bmc 1.5 has finally given up the ghost. Any suggestions for a replacement keeping the Enfield leg?

Anything with available marinising parts and spares with the same rotation (enfield can't be used the other way round as the dogs ride over each other), the likes of beta/nanni are very popular ready to go packages but not cheap. The new mot rules may give you a good choice of car engines going cheap.

I am right in thinking the bmc rotates in a clockwise direction when looking from the front?

| I Used a 25 HP 3 cylinder Kubota in my 32 and connected it to my enfield. I think Beta use Kubota so marinising parts are avaiable |

I'm by no means a top dog expert on BMC's but would have thought that something really destructive would be needed to totally kill one! Something terminal like all the cylinders seized??? Plus, there are so many bits around, no chance of saving it?

Have a chat with Mike Bellamy at Lancing Marine - they do parts for marinising pretty much anything except the dog!
Used to be loads of Perkins 4.107's and 4/108's about - ex taxis and Transit vans, plus marinised ones where folk have done a change-over to newer or bigger but first so long as you can get parts for yours what have you done to it that causes you to trash it?

Finally living the dream!

Hi,engine has had a refurbished injector pump and injectors, all good there. I can turn the engine over by hand with effort, not as much as i would have thought for a diesel. Suspect a compression issue as the amount of oil fumes from the breather when the engine was last running. Back cabin has to have the windows open when the engine is running! and then you can't see in there.
I might look at a project of converting the boat to electric drive? I know the boat is 51 years young, but the idea of an all electrical or hybrid appeals to me.
I will keep you all updated with progress.
I didn't want to get rid of the BMC as it is going to be a challenge to get it out of the back cabin. No Dave I am not allowed to remove it (she who must be obeyed has forbidden it!

I'd keep it, get it out and get it hoisted ashore and strip it down and give it a short block over haul. Take it to pieces, get it all degreased at an engine rebuild place as it makes it so much easier to work on it. Grind the crankshaft, rebore and have new mains, ends and pistons. Get the head and valves fettled, you can do that yourself but might want to let the engine place do it for you. Refit the pump and get it timed by the engine place. A lot cheaper than a new engine, it will outlast you, and respray it a nice blue colour before putting it back in the boat.
Failing any of the above, just take it to an engine place and let them just do the lot!
But don't go leccy - you really cannot cruise for long periods on electric motors, keep with nice cheap abnd safe diesel. You get hot water as well with a calorifier. Can't do that with an electric motor.

Finally living the dream!

A little trick to try before declaring it dead, and this one will get a few folk cringing.... Remove air filter and run it up under a bit of load and sprinkle a spoonful of vim (powder not liquid) into the air intake, it will probably cough and splutter a bit before it settles, it roughs the bores up a bit and gives the rings a chance to bed in again, I've seen it done a few times with success in bringing compression up and lowering oil consumption. If all the marinising bits are in good nick it would be easier and cheaper to recon the engine that you have all the bits for and already fits.

Hi, just an update on the engine. It is fubar, took the head off tonight and found a couple of problems.
1, didn't need feeler gauge to measure the gap at top of the stroke, more like a taxi! There must be nearly a MM movement, not seen an engine that bad for a long time.
2, the coolant channels are badly blocked.
Decision made new engine time.
Anyone want to make an offer on 4 injectors that have just been rebuilt and an injector pump? There is going to be rest on offer for a reasonable offer.
