Evening all, I am fitting a 300 mm vertical strip of foam backed 3 mm headlining around the v in the front of my boat. Best stuff to stick it to grp please. I think Clive commented on it before but i have lost the answer(s) in my head. It's an age thing. Or is foam backed a bad idea and just use plain vinyl. Regards Phil.

The vinyl in my princess is foam backed, well it was 35 years ago now it's mostly dust backed, no idea which glue is best though.

I suspect my comment would have been along the lines of the cheapest foam-backed carpet stuck with Evostik contact adhesive with loads of ventilation and perhaps a fan too to clear fumes. Slap it on to the hull with a brush and bed the carpet into it wet.

The reason for carpet is it prevents condensation that makes your bedding wet. Do it to the u/side of the foredeck too.

Cut the carpet a little oversize, trim once it is stuck with a craft knife ("Stanley" knife).

Allow overlaps to "look" away from you - then you won't see them.

Thanks for that to both of you. I am testing 4 small templates of 3 mm foam backed carpet to 4 small plastic squares. Uhu coated on the one side and another spread on both of the surfaces. Then same again with Hard as nails using a cartridge gun. Both claim to stick anything to anything provided one side is porus. Winner gets the job or it's back to b and q.

Try a Builder's Merchant for Evostik 528 Contact adhesive. B & Q will probably only offer a PC correct solvent free that really will be quite useless in a marine environment.

Screwfix do it: https://www.screwfix.com/p/evo-stik-528-industrial-contact-adhesive-transluscent-amber-2-5ltr/42076

Petrol will clean tools and hands. NO SMOKING is the rule and lots of fresh air ventilation, a fan is good but the results are worth the hassle of using 528.

Have to say that I have always avoided foam backed carpet for jobs like this. The foam does not like the possible damp atmosphere and it does deteriorate to dust! The best stuff to use is something like the old "floatex" which was very flexible and waterproof. There were (an still may be) budget versions of this which I suspect would be better suited!

Thanks for the comments. Thing is i did it today using 2 tubes of hard as nails straight to the grp. The headlining is only a 240 mm x 3 metre strip on a vert surface behind the bed, and using it on the template i needed a paint scraper to get it off. The material was the wifes old table top protector from home cut to size. Had probs withe pointy end as it is off centre and falls away 50 mm from the top to the bottom. Will see how it holds up.

!0 days later it's still on and holding well despite the weather. I also left the little templates outside on the back deck, (by mistake i might add), still stuck ok. This stuff Hard as Nails is a quid for a full sized tube from Poundland. Bloke who does tiling for a living told me about it in the pub, picking his brains. I used the uhu also a quid for comparison. Hope somebody dont tell me it gives off lethal fumes when stuck to grp.
