Not used a cb for over 30 years but I would guess it's still full of d*ckheads swearing and playing music over the calling channels, the worst thing that ever happened to cb was legalising it. Most cb aerials need a good ground plane which isn't easy on a grp boat. PMR is ok for short range as long as everyone you want to talk to has the right gear, vhf is fairly common but you need to do the course and stick to the rules (mostly) and get a fixed ship licence to be legal, lots don't and get away with it as long as they abide by the rules and only use the right channels.

Like Dave I used one a lot, East Anglia is good because it is flat and CB doesn't have a lot of range. You'll need an antenna with qa built-in ground plane or else mount it on a a large chunk of metal with a ground wire into the water.
Then when you turn it on you'll find a couple of pensioners yakking on one channel and probably little else - the fad has died. You'll probably also find after your channel 19 "one nine for a copy" call that no one is listening!
Unless you have a mate with a similar rig to talk to what would be the point?
 Finally living the dream!

I'm not sure anyone does use CB on a boat. Offshore it's VHF and inland mostly nothing except a mobile phone unless you want to be one of those comedy crews who rush ahead on foot to set the lock then use your walkie talkie to demand an ETA from the skipper.
At a lockside pub in Braunston a whole pub garden witnessed an unfolding domestic argument via such a radio. We could only hear one side of it but that did not spoil the entertainment. I wondered if the fella steering had deliberately slowed down to get some peace and quiet. |

VHF is good for inland too on some waters, on the broads we call the swing bridges on ch12, I think it was ch73 or 74 for the locks on the trent, you can call them ahead and the lock is waiting for you when you get there, general chat (as long as it relates to navigation) is usually on ch6. And if you have a dsc set you can call other boats directly a bit like making a phone call, you need the fixed ship licence to use dsc functions though as you get issued an mmsi number automatically, the licence is free and can be done online via the ofcom website.

All good fun, but if you use the River Trent twixt Stockwith and Goole you come under the rule of the Port Authority who specify you must have a vhf radio, anchor, 2 crew and life- jackets etc.Big ocean going ships still use that stretch and when they come abreast a Norman life can get interesting.

| As far as I know Phil, that does not apply as far as Trent Falls. Goole is actually on the "proper" real Ouse upstream of the junction of the Trent, Ouse and Humber. |

Even though the lock at Keadby is operated by CRT. The River Trent up to Gainsbrough is under the control of the Port authority whose requirement is a 2 man crew minimum, Life Jackets, VHF radio and an Anchor is also recommended. This was a Legal Requirement in 2014 and I don't think it has been repealed even though the Commercial Traffic up the river has pretty well died off. I'm thinking more of the fact that if anything goes wrong, the insurance companies will sharp pick up on the small- print and void a claim.
