Hi all. I'm new to this forum and the world of boating and would really appreciate a couple of bits of advice.
1. I have recently purchased the boat shown in the pictures, my research suggests that it's a Norman 18.5 however someone else thought it was a Norman 20. Could anyone clarify exactly which model it is?
2. I would like to re-paint the entire exterior in a bid to bring it back close to original condition. I have pretty good diy skills, however I have never tried anything like this with a fiberglass boat before. If anyone could provide guidance from prep processes through to paining,(techniques, materials, finishes etc) I would be very grateful.

After typing this I can't seem to insert any pictures of the boat, if anyone could advise how I'll see if I can add them in.

Thanks in advance.
Paul

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Clive will probably be along soon to give the correct advise for posting a picture, but in the meantime..

Upload your photo to a photo sharing site, such as http://imgur.com/

Once the image is uploaded to their site, copy the direct URL and come back here. Create a new post, and then click the add image button ()

This will give you two image tags. Paste the direct link in between the two image tags and away you go.

International Pains and Hemple Paints both do a booklet that steps you through it... lots of fantastic advice... its free from most marine paint stockists.

It's all in the preparation!!!!!

I've just sanded down my fibre glass hull to give the paint something to grip to, used some epoxy marine filler to fill in any dinks, and then painted it on (with a roller) with some white Two Pack paint. But Clives your man.

Jo has the right idea, and if using white or basic colours can I offer a suggestion? Brewers (C Brewer & Sons Ltd) are agents for the Bradite range of 2-pack paints as used on mercantile marine ships.

It comes in 2.5 and 5 litre tins, plus a tin for hardener, and you'll need to order plenty of thinner too because it is pretty near 80% solids. It is far far cheaper than little tins of International from the swindlerys, especially so when you realise you must thin it to use it - a gallon will easily paint a boat a couple of coats.

They also do primer - I advocate using one especially if you are covering strong colours that might bleed through.

I am using www.postimage.org, it is free. Select the image you've up-loaded from your computer, on the code box select "Hotlink for forums" and click the little icon to the right of the box the code is in and it will briefly say "copied". Click "paste" in your forum post and the code will appear, looking like this:

(url=https://postimage.org)(img]https://s19.postimg.org/63jyqomer/DSC00525.jpg(/img)(/url)(url=https://postimage.org/)image hosting without account(/url)

All the brackets are this style,[ ] I've changed them for the example shown to ( ) so you can see the code.

Delete every thing to either side of the part of the code at either end thus:

(img)https://s19.postimg.org/63jyqomer/DSC00525.jpg(/img)

Again I've changed the brackets.

Click post new reply and the picture appears. This one is my pistol in Thailand.

Thats an 18.5, the grp screen and rubber windows fitting gives it away.

Early 18.5, later ones had different windows and ali-screen.

Blimey - something wrong - Dave and I agree again, this is getting to be habit forming!
