So, here's one for the serious teccies out there. What, approximately, is the power to weight ratio required to move a boat? That is to say how big an engine do I need (horse power) to move a Norman 32 which weighs approx. 2.5 tons fully loaded plus some extra power left over. Your answers are, as always, very welcome. Thanks.

Most 32's have inboard engines at the stern, a lot also have outdrives such as the Enfield. Depends how much money you want to spend £3K plus on a new Beta or find one with a good old 1.5 BMC.
Where you are using the boat also has a bearing. Broads, Canals and many rivers have a 6mph or even lower speed limit.

5hp outboard would get it moving, once going probably pretty close to it's hull speed too, BUT.... It'll take 20 times as long to stop again and manouvering would be a complete nightmare.
15-20 would probably be enough for canal cruising if going for outboard but as said most 32's had inboard usually with enfield outdrive, any small diesel would be fine.
I recon you'd be a good bit over 2.5 tons once loaded.

I have fitted a 25hp 3 cylinder kubota in my 32 and connected to the enfield leg which I think is what a lot of the betas are. The engine I took out was a single cylinder Yanmar which was either 8 or 12 hp which pushed the boat along well.
I Have a Norman 25 which has a Perkins 4108 in it about 50 hp. Far to powerful its 4 mph on tick over.

My 32 had a merc. benz 42hp inboard diesel with Transa outdrive.
When we lifted her out for servicing and painting, etc, the crane gauge clocked just over 3 ton.
