As the team has rotted, I'm in the process of removing them with a 9mm socket set, a screwdriver and junior hacksaw. Am thinking of replacing with rubber (am assuming that it'd be cheaper). Any comments or suggestions?

A chunky "D" section can look really nice if you are prepared to spend the money and do it properly. They have a piece of stainless slid inside and you bore a 1/2" hole through the outside to allow a smaller drill to drill the bolt hole through the hull.

Back it up inside with a piece of 1/2" plywood, outside they used to sell plugs you glued into the 1/2" hole but if not a joiner's plug cutter on a piece of scrap - glue it in and sand it off. Be aware that real rubber is very expensive and that synthetic alternatives are cheaper

You need one quite low down to prevent scrapes from those low lock-sides and maybe another a bit higher but shorter as it looks better.
