That antifoul is EVIL!
I was blue, wife was blue, child was blue and even the damn dog was blue. I imagined 1 box of respiration masks would be enough... I was wrong.

Best way is to pay the boat-yard to jet wash it off for you.
Then just re-paint it - only the supermarket trolleys on the canal bottom will ever see the boat bottom again.
If you were moored in Chi or on the Arun you'd have 50 tonnes of shellfish clinging to the bottom and it becomes more critical to keep it properly anti-fouled but really all you need to do on the canal or river - and this is not a joke - is paint the part the daylight sees, so from boot-topping if you have one or say 4 inches above the moored waterline if you don't down to the turn of the bilge or chine.
Seriously - don't bother to paint the bottom unless you like throwing money away. Don't believe me? Go to Richardson's yard at Stalham on Broads, or any other hire boat yard, check out their over-winter painting programme and see what they do. They are professionals and don't waste money or resources.
I have had different boats moored in fresh water for most of 50 years - that is all I ever did and there was never weed-growth out of the small areas sunlight could reach. Nor crustaceans either for that matter. But sea water - that's a different matter.

This is one of my upcoming jobs. Did you have to sand, primer then anti foul, or clean off any of the rough bit and whack on the anti foul?

/Remove loose only is all I ever did, and NEVER sand it - that raised dust. Jet-washing is good, scrape anything the jetwash didn't blast off that is obvious, slap on anti-foul. But if the boat stays in the water only sides waterline down, if on a trailer why do it at all? A coat of black bitumen paint is as good as anything and dirt cheap.

I fully endorse what Clive says on this.... DONT sand anti foul... you wouldn't spray your kids with Roundup???
On fresh water it is only cosmetic.... a quick whiz round the waterline is all that is needed.
I have not put anything on the bottom of my boat since I purchased her 4 years ago.... what was there last week when I hauled out.... NOTHING... just a bit of slime around the waterline... 30 seconds with a jet ash saw that away!!

Like wot they said, for fresh water jetwash when it first comes out of the water, brush off the loose stuff, antifoul around the waterline first then go under till the can runs out, walk away and have a beer, then another beer, and maybe another beer.
And yes Deano, I would spray kids with roundup if it kept em quiet! Good job I don't have any....

| Round up is supposed to be OK to drink although I've not tried it. So spraying children should be fine. |

| Thanks all.. I'll happily never paint it again truth be told. I figured I'd do it once as I don't know when it was last done. Once it's back in the water, I don't plan on taking it back out anytime soon! :) |

| Don't know why you got in such a mess, I always put on a throw away suit, latex gloves, safety specs etc, start at the keel and work outwards so you never have fresh paint above you. Old mat to lie on, only brush parts a mini roller wont get into. I get through at least five mini roller foams on my 23ft boat, one coat takes about an hour or so. But as mentioned it is toxic stuff children and pets around is a complete no no. |
