I have new carpet lining and glue arriving today for the interior of my Norman 23. I obviously have a little bit of work to do before I'm at the stage of fitting it, but have started wondering how I'm going to tackle putting it in around the windows. Most of them are lined with silicone sealer. I'm not sure if the previous owner (who spent a period of time living on it) went a bit Sealer crazy just to play it safe or if all the windows are actually rather leaky. Either way there are a couple of the windows still a bit leaky, 2 corners in particular. I've noticed all the little bolts on the inside of the window frames and am starting to toy with the idea of undoing the little bolts to try and take the frames out to clean off all the old silicone sealer and re-apply new stuff. Is this even possible, or should I just bung more silicon into the leaky corners?

When I did my renovation I removed everything. My advise is do the same and you will reap the rewards later. Remove bolts, frames and then separate the glass from the frame. Then check the small brackets that hold the sections of the frame together, if they are in a poor state, replace them with new. Check the condition of the rubber seal. When all is good and cleaned up, use a high quality sealer and don't be shy when applying, you can always remove excess sealant. This is a time consuming process but the results are a bone dry cabin....don't cut corners unless you want a wet cabin Good Luck |

Seals are easy enough. Seals+ Direct will send you a catalogue and samples. You may also get a small discount if you mention that you found them here! The link within our site does not work. This does!

Windows may be more difficult but these people may still be able to help.

Silicone is the sealant of the devil... it has no place on a a boat....!! Ever!!
The frames are covered in silicone in an attempt to seal them... as you can see, it doesn't work... this does not prevent our DIY'r from putting more on!!
Your best course of action is to wait for a warm and dry day. Remove one window.... take all the screws out and it should come apart with the use of some wall paper scrapers as wedges. Remove ALL the silicone... it is a "Oh my word" to get off entirely... mechanical removal is best... any remaining traces of silicone will prevent ANYTHING from sealing the windows.... EVER.
Reassemble, you may have rubber to glass... this should seal OK, but may require new seals... Seals Direct are your friends here. The metal to GRP seal should be done using a butyl sealant.. Abormast BR is the choice of the pros.... it works better than ANYTHING. Apply plenty... clean up with paper towel and white spirit. Done carefully, you will have 100% sealed windows for many years to come.

I'll be replacing some of the windows on my 23 this year as perspex has crazed and rubbers cracked, etc. Hadn't heard of Baines before so I googled it and looked at their web catalogue. Price for 10m of rubber and insert was £25.80. Seals Direct want nearly £60 for what looks like the same stuff (didn't ask about NBAS discount). Haven't bought any yet tho', Jud. |

Right, so I've decided to bite the bullet and take the long window out on the left side to remove sealant, clean up/putty it and put back in again. I"m assuming I undo all the little 8mm bolts around the inside frame, remove the internal frame, then prize the outer frame and window from the exterior?

The best tools to get it out are wallpaper scrapers... you can lightly hammer them into the join and slowly work round until it is free.

| When I did the windows in my 32 I put them back in with 5mm socket head countersunk stainless bolts and dome head nuts. makes it easy to remove in the future if needed. |

Do them one at a time, you may find you have to drill out the screws that hold the frame halves together, you won't be able to get at them till the frame is out, they screw into thin plates that bridge across between the frame halves in the runner behind the seals.

| On my windows there was brass screws holding the frames together which would not unscrew I drilled them out and ran a 5mm tap down and put in 5mm stainless socket head countersunk bolts. |
